Tattoos & Piercings

Tattoos, face and body piercings are very popular among many people. This is a personal choice and we are neither recommending for or against, our objective is to share some important information that you should consider before or after getting a tattoo.

A recent study in France found that nano particles of tattoo colour had lodged in the lymph nodes of many people who had received tattoos, it is as yet unknown what the effects on the lymph nodes will be. Lymph nodes produce blood cells designed to help fight disease and infections.

Tattoos have been around for a long time but the highly colourful tattoos covering large portions of the body, is a more recent practice in the wider population choosing to have tattoos. Some of the chemicals found in tattoo ink include preservatives and contaminants such as nickel, chromium, manganese and cobalt.

What can go wrong with tattoos and body piercing? Apart from initial discomfort, most people will be OK, however sadly for some there will be problems, these can include:

  • Bacterial infections which can cause scarring, these infections can range from mild skin rashes to severe abscesses.
  • Allergic reactions.
  • Residual chemicals in the body with unknown consequences.
  • Poor management of tattoo needles may lead to liver problems due to hepatitis.
  • There is also a chance your employment prospects may be reduced.

The most important things to consider include:

  • Going to a reputable tattooist
  • Ensuring safe sterile needles are used
  • Checking the formulation of the inks for tattoos
  • Ensure the person carrying out body piercing follows strict hygiene procedures
  • Identifying and following good hygiene when recovering from the tattoo or piecing process.

Tattoos can be removed through laser treatment, which may be expensive and there is often a residual “shadow”. It is a pity that something that is a fashion, has long term consequences.
